Relationships May Change

Sometimes difficult feelings are related to changes in the person you are caring for. Other times they are a response to your own strong emotions related to the caregiving experience. Past family experiences can also impact changing relationships.

Think about how you have seen relationships change in your family. Which of the following comments seem familiar to you?

“Our family actually bonded and became closer.”
“I thought our family would be more supportive of the decisions we made.”
“My family has always been a mess and it still is!”
“I feel so responsible for everything now.”

It is important to realize that these changes in your family are normal. Relationships evolve as individual people have changes in their needs and abilities to meet those needs.
